LSAT Tip of the Week Analytical Reasoning Practice Problem #1 LSAT Law School Blog This week, we will focus on an example of how to setup an analytical reasoning (logic games) question. Our practice question will be from the June 2007 LSAT. This is Section 1, Question 1: A company employee generates a series of five-digit product codes in accordance with the following rules: The codes use the digits 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4, and no others. Each digit occurs exactly once in any code. The second digit has a value exactly twice that of the first digit. The value of the third digit is less than the value of the fifth digit. Rule 1 - First, we will diagram this question by pulling out each rule we are given. The first one states that it is a five-digit code, so we will make 5 blank spaces. __ __ __ __ __ Rule 2 - Next, we are told that these digits only use the digits 0-4 and no others. 0 1 2 3 4 Rule 3 - Then we are told each digit occurs only one time. 0 1 2 3 4 1 1 1 1 1 Rule 4 - The next rule is that the second digit has a value exactly twice that of the first digit, so: x 2x _ _ _ : From this rule we can infer that there are only two possibilities once this rule is considered, either: 1 2 _ _ _ OR 2 4 _ _ _ Rule 5 - Our final rule is that the value of the third digit is less than the value of the fifth digit. From this we infer that the number “4” cannot be in space 3 and the number “0” cannot be in space 5. Once you diagram it always is smart to make a few scenario possibilities with all the rules taken into account. So, we have: #1: 1 2 0/3 _ 3/4 â€" This is compiling all the rules since we know the second number has to be twice the first, which works here with 1 2. It also takes into account that the third digit fifth digit â€" and we only have the numbers 0, 3, and 4 left so this means that spots 3 and 5 will either be 0 3, 0 4, or 3 4. #2: 2 4 0/1 _ 1/3 â€" Again, we are compiling all the rules since we know second number is twice the first, which works with 2 4. With the rules down and the two scenarios already figured out, you will probably be able to already answer a question or two. Let’s try the first one together just to see how we will implement what we have diagrammed. Question 1: If the last digit of an acceptable product code is 1, it must be true that the (A) first digit is 2 (B) second digit is 0 (C) third digit is 3 (D) fourth digit is 4 (E) fourth digit is 0 This is a “must be true” question and we must implement all of our previously stated rules in addition to the new one we are given, that the last digit has to be 1. Since we diagrammed and made example scenarios, this will be a piece of cake. We will use Scenario #2 here: #2: 2 4 0/1 _ 1/3 Our new rule is that digit 5 must be 1, so: 2 4 0/1 _ 1 Since each digit can only be used once (Rule # 3), we know that the third digit will have to be 0, and the only digit left for digit 4 is a 3- so we have our final code: 2 4 0 3 1. Now answering the question will be simple, we will just run through each answer choice and see which was holds to be true with the code we have created. 5 Things Every Rising Senior Should Do This Summer 5 Things Every Rising Senior Should Do This Summer College juniors are excited that the academic year is finally coming to an end.   In many ways, college is almost over but there is still a lot to do before graduation. Additionally, once college is officially over students will need to start looking for jobs and adjust to a professional lifestyle. There are some things students can do the summer between their junior and senior year to make the last year of college and the graduation process run smoothly. Unfortunately, students who dont keep track of graduation requirements and other relevant details may end up being a fifth-year senior at the last minute. Its better to stay on top of things and plan ahead to have a great final year as a full-time student. 1. Look through transcripts The first thing rising seniors should do is look through their transcript. Many students find out they are just one or two courses short of graduation, which can prevent them from getting their diploma the following spring. If a student made a miscalculation earlier on, theres still time to make it right before the start of senior year. One option is to take some elective courses over the summer to get extra units. Another option is to take a heavier load of courses starting in the fall. Most universities have a range of what is considered “full time.” It might be better to take five classes instead of four and still graduate on time. If students are at all confused about this process, they are encouraged to speak with one of the academic advisors who can look through everything and make sure the student is on the right track. 2. Arrange work experience Rising seniors are also encouraged to arrange some relevant work experience over the summer. This may consist of an internship or a paid position. Either way, its a good idea to have something productive listed on a resume the summer before graduation. Students who are overwhelmed with what they have already completed throughout the academic year and would rather just relax should know that many internships are only one or two weeks long but still add to a students resume. Its important to have real life on-the-job experience as well as something impressive to put on paper. 3. Volunteer Another great way to beef up that student resume over the summer is to volunteer. Sometimes, jobs within a professional field are simply unavailable to students who have not yet graduated. However, there is almost always a need for a volunteer. This is different from an internship in that students can set a more flexible schedule. For example, if an internship is from 8 to 5 Monday through Friday, thats when the intern works. Volunteers, however, can say that theyre available Thursdays and Fridays from 2 to 6 p.m., for example. This is a great option for students who need to attend summer classes or need to have a part-time job to make ends meet (READ: 5 Ways to Survive Spring Semester as a Senior). 4. Meet with professors and TAs Its a fabulous idea for students to meet with their professors or teaching assistants over the summer or as the term is wrapping up. This doesnt have to be a formal meeting in the professors office; it can be a simple meeting over a cup of coffee on campus. Professors and TAs can be a great resource when it comes to planning an entry-level career search or looking for an internship. Most of them have great connections and knowledge that other people simply dont possess. Also, meeting with professors gives students an opportunity to ask any additional questions. If nothing else this meeting will let the professor know the student is genuinely interested in their major field of study and will maintain a professional connection for the future (READ: 3 Warning Signs of Senioritis). 5. Arrange and informational interview Another great thing for rising seniors to do over the summer is arrange an informational interview with somebody in the field they plan to go into. This should not be confused with an official job interview. An informational interview is simply asking someone who is already a seasoned professional to provide some mentoring or advice. This gives students the opportunity to put questions without the pressure of having a full-time job on the line. Summer is the perfect time to catch-up and get ahead on your schooling. These tests provide a snapshot of how much knowledge a student has acquired by a certain point and also how this level of skill and knowledge compares to other students of the same age. This comparison is often further broken down into how your child fares in relation to similarly situated students in his or her own school, school district, and throughout the nation. When reviewing this information you may have many questions about what your child's scores mean in practical terms for your response in the short-term and for your planning in the future. Understanding how the test scores relate to the teaching available to your son or daughter and how your child is responding to the learning environment is crucial for you to best support your child. Purpose of the testing Understanding the reasons for the testing can help you assess your student's performance. The test scores within a school can give you valuable information about the challenges schools face locally and how well they are meeting those challenges. Once you have a grasp of the performance of your student's peers at several different levels, then you have a better feel for how your child's scores compare. You can next look more closely at his or her scores for information about competence and growth. Communicate with teacher and school Schedule a time to discuss your child's test performance with someone who can explain both what the test reveals about your child and what other measures are in place to measure his or her growth. Spend some of that time reviewing your child's score and exploring what it means to school officials. Find out how the teacher and school intends to use the score and whether they are concerned about your child's showing. If your child did well, ask for suggestions to challenge your child to continue the growth. If the score is lower, talk about whether the performance was to be expected given what the school knows about your student and what they have planned to accelerate academic growth. Look at the big picture Ask to see other indicators of your child's progress, which may be hard to translate into a test score. Does your child show growth in the arts or social skills that gives you a more complete idea of how learning is progressing? Is there a gap between the knowledge and skills your child can demonstrate in the classroom and the test results? Problem solve with school officials if the test results are lower than what had been expected given classroom performance. Discuss the school's approach for test preparation and ask if there are things you can be doing at home to improve the score during the next round. Use the scores for good Whether your student scored below, at, or above expectations, use the test and result to improve your child's overall learning experience. Once you have a baseline for your student, keep in mind one of the best indicators going forward is how he or she performs in the future compared to that snapshot. If your child needs help on the next test or in general, seek resources from the school or ELSEWHERE. If your child is already soaring far beyond his or her peers, use this knowledge to enrich both home and school life for continued growth and success.
